Video Gaming Guide for Parents

No doubt you have heard the dangers of video games and the Internet being discussed by the media and debated on talk radio shows.  From the online predator to the role that video game violence had in the latest murder case, video games are often blamed as a part of our society’s problems.  Whether this scrutiny is fair or not is up for debate, however it is vital for a parent to be involved and to be aware of what their child is playing and their online gaming habits.

An unsuspecting parent who sees video games as innocent child’s play, witnessing some of today’s popular first person shooter games may be in for a shock.  Many of these games that have been designed for a mature audience have graphic, lifelike violence and gore as well as strong language and sexual overtones.

On the other hand some parents may assume that there is absolutely no video games appropriate for children.  They will be missing out on some games that can provide an evening of fun and interactive entertainment for the entire family.

As with any activity, it is important for parents to be actively involved in the interests of their children.  There are a number of things that parents can do to promote a safe and fun experience.

Video Gaming Tips for Parents

  • Sit down with your kids and play the games that they are playing.  Most games can be rented at the local video store so you can rent and try it out before buying to see if it is appropriate.
  • Make sure the console is in a common area so that you keep an eye on what is being played.
  • Talk with your kids and agree on rules for video game use.  Set time limits on the amount of time that the video game console can be played.
  • Educate your child on the dangers of cyberbullying, which is using information technology to harass, threaten or intimidate others.
  • Educate your child on the dangers of information theft.  Ensure that your child knows to never share personal information.  Make sure that user names do not include identifying personal information.
  • Seek private games with gamers that you know and groups you trust.
  • Understand the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB) ratings.
  • Understand your console’s family settings or parental controls.
  • Set rules on the use of the headset for voice chat and discourage or prohibit the use a webcam, especially when unsupervised.
  • Teach your children general online safety habits.  Understand text messaging abbreviations.  If you suspect that your child is talking to an online predator contact the appropriate authorities.  If in immediate danger contact 911.  Make a report at http://www.cybertipline.com/ which is reviewed by law enforcement.
  • And most of all enjoy your time together doing something that you and your kids can both enjoy.

Video Game Health and Safety tips

Video games can have negative health affects if played in excess or without regard to health and safety, but they can be a relaxing way to relieve stress and enjoy as a family if you follow some basic safety tips.

  • Find a comfortable position with good posture, relaxed upper arms and keeping wrists straight.
  • Make sure you have comfortable seating that supports the lower back.
  • Limit the tilting of your head and neck for extended periods of time.
  • Ensure regular breaks.  Some games can be addictive as you want to just finish this one more level.  Before you know it, it is four hours later.
  • Avoid screen glare.
  • Keep a balanced lifestyle.  Ensure appropriate periods of exercise and a healthy diet.
  • As today’s game become more active and interactive (ie Wii Sports), ensure that proper safety procedures for the controllers are used, such as safety straps so the controller doesn’t slip out of your hand and pummel your competitor.
  • You have probably seen the seizure warnings on the video game manual.  Remember that a very small percentage of people may experience seizures due to the flashing and light patterns.
  • Remember to consult a physician if experiencing symptoms that may be related to video gaming, such as MSD (Muscular Skeletal Disorder).
